Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

Refractive Lens Exchange Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is an elective intraocular procedure that is performed the same way as cataract surgery. During an RLE procedure, the eyes natural lens (crystalline lens) is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

This procedure is recommended for patients who are not eligible for laser vision correction (LASIK or PRK) because of high degrees of nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and/or those who are presbyopic. Presbyopia is when your eyes gradually lose their ability to focus on things up close; it is a natural part of aging.

Once an RLE procedure is completed, patients will never need to undergo cataract surgery as the natural crystalline lens has already been removed. There are various IOL implant options available for this procedure that can correct vision for distance, intermediate, near or all of the above. The IOL types are based on your eyes and visual needs and will be discussed with you during your consultation with one of our experienced doctors.

Our doctors have a vast amount of knowledge and experience in performing intraocular procedures. They will assist you in making the IOL choice that is best suited for your eyes and your lifestyle.
