On the day of your procedure we have you arrive at The Windsor Laser Eye Institute 30 minutes prior to your scheduled surgery. This gives us time to take care of paperwork and prepare your eyes for the procedure. You will be required to read and sign the consent form. Prior to surgery, we will give you Valium to relax you during surgery. Wavescan measurement will be taken prior to surgery and it is important that you leave your contact lenses out for at least 3 days prior to surgery.
You will be taken to the surgical suite where a technician will administer anesthetic drops to numb the eye and prevent pain. You will also receive antibiotic drops to prevent infection and anti-inflammatory drops to reduce post-surgery discomfort. Dr. Tayfour will then comfortably position you under the laser. The non-surgical eye is covered and the other is prepared for surgery. You will then be instructed to look at a flashing red light.
You will notice a slight sensation of pressure and your vision will go dark as Dr. Tayfour prepares the protective corneal flap. This will be followed by a clicking sound as the laser gently reshapes your cornea. Remarkably, the laser is applied to each eye for less than one minute for the average prescription. You will not experience any pain during your LASIK procedure.
Immediately after the procedure you will relax in our recovery room for a few minutes. When you are ready to leave, we will give you a post-procedure kit, which includes eye drops, medication to help you sleep, goggles for showering, sunglasses and written instructions. We ask that you take two 1 mg tablets of Lorazepam within 15 to 20 minutes of leaving our office. Before you go, we will schedule a follow-up appointment for the next morning. Go home with a driver and sleep for six to eight hours.
You may experience some discomfort after surgery. Symptoms of the eye may include burning, grittiness and tearing. Excessive tearing/watering is normal. Do not rub or touch your eyes. When you return the next morning the doctor will perform a brief examination to be sure everything is healing properly.
You may resume normal activities the day following your surgery with the exception of swimming, hot tubs or contact sports for two weeks.
Most importantly, do not rub or touch your eyes and women no eye makeup for two weeks.
